According to legend, the temple was in a forest full of bushes. Hunters used to go into the forest and pray to the deity by offering the animals they had hunted. From such incidents, a practice arose where anyone who wanted to pay a debt to the deity had to make a sacrifice. But later, this practice was restricted to the Chithirai festival. All the villagers realised the deity's power and continued making the sacrificial offering.
